Long ago I came back from a 230,000 hole at 44th level to hero. I was a lonely rager back in the days when there were ALOT of necros including Zaupheaus and Coprophageous(SP -5,) and they used to have Fairborn sanc them and thier zombies and tess around to you... Ouch. Also you lost xp's from dying from poison and the like... The Master's cabal was in the Galaxy so you'd get blinded, poisoned, plagued and end up in a no-exit room (Before Truesight helped with that.) Man those were the days when Ragers were the underdogs, but a well played one made it all worthwhile.
Oh, the point is you can easily dig your way out, just make sure you haven't lost so much CON that its not worth it.
