Agreed. Even though roles exist where it would be in character to perform random acts of violence, I'm not convinced that those duergar warriors who wait for you on Eastern Road are really thinking about roleplaying. "Me evil, you good" and its counterpart "Me good you evil" (substitute law/chaos or magic/nature as needed) are equally uninteresting to me. Cookie-cutter, shallow roles are the bane of CF right now. (Of course, CF's roleplaying is orders of magnitude better than most other MUDs I have seen. Roleplaying is difficult, and there will always be people who are more interested in other aspects of the game as well. C'est la vie. On a positive note, the RP seems to get better and better over time.) *steps off soapbox*

I should hope it suits both role and sphere, actually. Along with cabal philosophy and alignment, while we're on the topic. I don't think I've ever had a character where I could look over my range, and decide that it would be OK to attack more than half of them on average. Maybe it's the roles I pick, but it does seem like there are just as many reasons to ally as to oppose, even if you really want to kill -someone-.

You don't really know a lot about Scarabs, do you? This is exactly equivalent to saying "It's OK for Empires to kill everyone, and not be able to explain why.", which you refute in your first statement.
