Just my wee suggestions...take them with a grain of salt.
I would go gnome. They have both high int and wisdom, therefore learn spells at a pretty good rate and gain a good amount of mana per level, which means a strong mana base to work with.
Also, not many people bring this up, but being neutral has some pretty major benefits to a new mage. You have the freedom to group with anyone. It seems to happen, at least to me, that I would log on with a good or evil aligned char, and find my entire pk range evil, or those of the same align would be ragers, or rager wannabes.
Pros:
High Int
High Wis
Good mana
Neutral/easier to find groups
*something to do with bashing small folk...cant remember*
low exp penalty compared to elves.
cons:
maces hurt
neutral only
There are many more...of which I will only remember after I submit this. But I played a gnome invoker as my first mage class, and was pretty successful...came out even as far as pk ratio, got to level 48 mastered all spells...autodeleted during christmas break...bummer.
Since I will think of more later, feel free to email me or post on here. Id be happy to help.
