I'd agree with the others about race, stick with gnome or human.

Here's how I would gauge the class you pick:

Transmuter- Easiest to rank with, and an arcane with duo is great for exploring. Hard to succesfully kill with for first timer, but easiest class to learn how to play a mage with
Invoker- Very fun to play, but be prepared to do lots of practicing. That's really not so bad, because you want to do that with most classes anyway. Can be a reasonable pk'er, even at low ranks if you get first attack.
Conjurer- Haven't played one, but seem more advanced, because you got to figure all these elite math with the mana and your demon or whatever will get pissed and kill you. I'd say stay away for a first mage, but I'm a wuss.
Necromancer- Best pk mage, I'd say. Harder to rank (why don't their zombies function like conjured creatures? poop), and you should be the kind of player who doesn't log on for less than two hours at a time to maximize the fun of raising undead everywhere. Fairly simple to play though.

Now, some fundamental mage tricks everyone knows but you:

Use locate item to find corpses and loot them, do c 'loc' gold and you'll see gold somewhere on a corpse

Use locate item a lot in general

Don't ever do "c spell 2." If you cast on yourself you lose 5% of spell

Don't practice armor (this is debatable)

Assume all non-mages are ragers
