My take...

Write a role if:

1. You want your character to have personal interactions with the Gods. When I read roles and see a well thought out background, I immediately try and think of how to build this information into my interaction with that person.
2. You are shooting for a leadership position. Big strikes against you with out this. If you are trying to be a leader you are supposed to be one of the better players, so you should be using all of the tools for RP open to you.
3. You want to be a priest class. Again, these classes are designed for the more advanced players. My personal feeling is, no role: no empower.
4. You want to avoid possible “bad RP” situation. If a role outlines that you have a certain goal in mind, getting to that goal might appear counter to your cabal’s goals. Your role just saved your ass.

Writing a role: It does not have to be pages. In fact, if it is too long it is difficult to get through. Remember, we are all players just like you. Reading a 20-page role is not something I cherish. I will do it because you obviously put a lot of time into it, but remember; that time I am reading could be used interacting with you.

In short: If you want to get the most out of what I consider to be the best parts of the game, write a role.
