I'd say use your judgement. If you were to approach me at level 10 with 30 pages of role for me to read, I'm probably not going to have time to sit there, read the novella, interview you, etc. within the time I have to be there and gone. I certainly wouldn't be long-winded for the sake of being long-winded.
If you can say what you need to concisely (and not just "I kill everything in sight"), then that's probably wise. If a story needs to be told in order to get a point across, do it. Just remember that the color of the pants you wore on the day you decided to become a priest may not be relevant to the person reading your role at a later date.
