I think it's good to have one town that's the source of most activity. A great place to auction, find people, and cause chaos.
With that, I rarely choose it because it's easy to get to, and easy to be found their. I go their to find prey, I stay away to keep my enemies from finding me.
Still, I don't go for the more remote hometowns because it's just a hassle being so far away. Especially if you're a warrior type who doesn't just teleport around to get places.
Location makes Galadon, New Thalos, Felar place, and Tar Valon best bets -- I hate walking.
If there's a raid, return to one of these and you can get to your cabal fast. That's why a lot of sylvans used to have seantryn, not that it makes much rp sense. I bet cabal closeness is quite a big factor though.
