Being independant is not that bad really, in fact it gives you more room to play with your role and figure out where the char wants to go. I don't know about the rest of you but it's not me that decides it, if you have a well developed char his decisions will be what gets him ahead, think like your char would not like the player looking for more power. Perhaps I'm wrong, I usually am or at least that's what my girlfriend tells me.
