The imms are all part of a plot by the Soviet Union(the breakup was a ruse) to take all of the young and bright and creative impulses of Western society, and turn the youth that would have otherwise gone into civil service (and proved to the world that Capitalism rocks) into mindless zombies addicted to Unholy green sygils.
Not to mention the subconscious anti-Clinton messages in the Eastern road descriptions (he is really a good president...people just think he is bad because CF tells us that is what we think)
They then take our addiction, which could evolve into an uprising against the immortal oppressors, and use techniques such as random slayings and eq poofing to keep us cattle in our place.
