Being a boring class is not exactly how I would put it. You have to act like an assassin in the forest, creeping about, always staying camoflaged, watching your prey and waiting for the perfect time to strike out and destroy them.

Rangers can really hold their own in combat. The scourge of a range is a necromancer though (in my experience anyway). Plagues, poisons, blindness, and a bit of faerie fire to keep you from hiding, and you're summon bait till you're dead.

I really enjoyed (before wood elves) not being seen by anyone but other rangers. You could get into a little trouble and run away, hiding in the forest until your enemies forgot about you. Then ambush them. Ranking alone was a piece of cake, as long as it was in the forest. If you see someone coming simply camo and wait for them to pass.

By far, the most evasive class I've ever played, I would play a ranger again in a heartbeat, but I've already got 3 lowbie chars, as I try to find one that will actually be able to advance into a worthy character anytime soon.
