Druids do have some powerful armor class reducers, with carapace and barkskin...but unfortunately a low armor class is not what will win you a fight. Armor of thorns is incredibly nice, as well as protection from metals. Those two things, plus fly and protection elements(if fighting conjurers or invokers)creates you many openings to use your offensive supplications.
And if you do want to avoid using call of the wild when you get up a bit higher, you have some awesome supplications that you should practice with and get to know. MOst of those only work when you are in a wooded area, but that's where a druid should be fighting. If you do get in to trouble, sunray is a good/easy standby. If you get a chance to flee, herbal medicine and heroe's feast are awesome and can clean you up of many maledictions, plus a nice heal.
So If you do decide to use a druid, keep those things in mind. There's only so much you can learn about a class from this forum...I'd always suggest spending a lot of time with the class in the game.
