Any race/class can choose any path within the village. Just make it part of your rp.

As for critical vs. deathblow.

I would say that at hero ranks, against regular people, deathblow's 5x damage is unbeatable.

BUT, you throw in a master with 2000 hp with aura protection shield (sanc sometimes to) the protections will lower the deathblow to below what a critical hit can do.

I have seen critical hits do really powerfull things against fully prepped mages.
