If you want to explore, try these:

Transmuter(G/N/E): Arcane(duo is nice to explore with),possibly defensive. Problem: Getting past rank 19...haste is alright....but most groups want BOTH haste and slow, and there are PLENTY of trannys out there competing for groups.
Healer(G/N/E): Can be good tank in upper ranks, sanc, and sanc room can get you out of trouble. Problem: Empowerment.
Paladin(G): (Storm Giant) Great Tank, sanc, and sanc room again. Problem: Empowerment, Exp penalty.

Don't try these:
Thief: They max out their skills at 30, and honestly suck in a fight (If they're not in BATTLE) if you're not good at getting the drop on people. Not an explore char.
Necro: Face it...you've got to be good to hero one of these (and at rank 47 EVERY good char is hunting your ass)....of course there was Golmagus...erm bad example...I mean...well...umm...think of Istendil instead....yeah.....he was no slouch.
Invoker: Practice, practice, practice...powerful as hell, but about as interesting as writing down on a piece of paper a thousand times "I will practice night and day....I will practice night and day...I will Zzzzzz..z...z..."
Warrior: It's possible to hero one of these...just expect trannys to POUND you when you hero (so enjoy those low ranks...they won't last).

Don't know about these:
I really haven't tried a new Druid, Assassin, or Conjurer. Who knows, you might get lucky.

Personally though, I'd go with the tranny, (duo) for best/easiest hero and exploring results.
