1) Answering a question with hints, rather than spoonfeeding, is actually good for the newer player. He'll learn to poke around Camelot a bit, and it's one of the best areas for level 1-10 equipment. I am completely honest when I say I want to help make new players better. It's why I like the Forum.
1b) If you hand a person an answer, they usually hit the next barrier and come back for more handouts. It's a valuable lesson I learned in my years of teaching experience. If you point them in the right direction and let them work on their own a bit, they learn to function better solo.
2) In any event, the skull (and garnet) rings actually have better AC. (Item search is neat, eh?) And you aren't likely to die looking for them. They're also not the rings I would get for most newbie characters- high damroll is actually a disadvantage when you are mostly fighting for practice. (Learn those weapons, kids!) I usually pick something that will help me last longer or have more mana (pitch-black rings lying around Udgaard, Ofcol Signets, strange rings, stuff lying around higher level areas with no aggro mobs, etc.)
