I've only had one dwarf with mace and polearm, but here's what I found.
Polearm works pretty well for dwarves, but not as well as with a giant from what I can tell.
Since most polearms are rather heavy, be careful against things which reduce strength.
You tank better with a pole than a mace which makes sense considering the weapons.
Mace is my favorite weapon with dwarves so I'm a bit biased. Boneshatter and cranial are just
so fun. One boneshatter can pretty much decide a battle against a good number of the population.
Cranial does work rather well against mage types and if you're planning on fighting them it's very
handy. It can be used similar to stun in emergencies, but don't rely on it. Drum is so nice to end
a fight. One round of 4 or 5 shots with drum is powerful. Heck even dent is fun if nothing else just
to annoy your opponent by crushing his nice armor.
I guess if you have to choose one for starting out with I'd choose pole just because you can tank pretty
well. For a second spec mace is quite nice.
