Well, I didn't play a dwarf per se, but I did play a duergar warrior specialized in axe and mace. Maces are indeed somewhat diffcult to come by but I found quickly that the stone batons from the dirt place with the sheriffs (I never was any good at remembering area names) were easily gotten and worked well for just about any occasion. Cranial was a great skill but in my opinion, overused by the mace specs in combat. My personal favorite spec skill in mace was dent. I often got out of fights I didn't want to be in simply by destroying my opponent's equipment.
Now, on the other hand, I have played a polearm spec (didn't hero this one) and I have found the difference in how often I got hit to be substantial. Yes, you may not hit as often with a polearm as you would with two maces but with cutoff at the later levels, it isn't going to matter a whole lot, especially if you start leg-sweeping, bashing, tripping, etc. My point here is to say that if you want to be a fat little tank at the lower levels, by all means specialize in polearm first. If you want to dish out some damage at the lower levels, mace is your better bet.
