I doubt anyone is reading this far back anymore - such is the hazards of catching up on the forums after coming back from sea.
I remember Gaul quite well. I was playing a battle thief by the name of Allanah at the time, and grouped with Gaul a lot at low-mid levels. It was very useful having a friend in shadow when you are hunting.
I fought Gaul once - my group ran into his in the shadow grove, and his group had been attacked by the guys I was grouped with. They attacked, and my groupmates fled (which was disappointing - being ragers). I stayed, backstabbing Strahd (might have been Strath - memory fails me) and killing him with a deathblow and a dual backstab. Backstabbed Hobbes and sent him packing. I was left fighting Gaul, whom I didn't want to fight, so I fled. He caught up to me at the entrance to the dragon tower, apologized, and killed me.
Cade, on the other hand, was purely annoying. Considering he claimed to be chaotic neutral, his roleplaying was deplorable - he just ran around killing anyone for no reason. Unlike today, that wasn't that common back then.
