Impale may not do as much initial damage, but it puts a hefty str/dex penalty on your foe, and causes bleeding damage for several ticks. However, a missed impale also gives your opponent a free whack at you.

Also, I know charge requires that your opponent be near full health, like backstab. Not sure about impale.
