Actually, each of the different nerve strikes do something to different stats. And, yes, they are cumulative. You can affect strength, dex, and con. Unlike caltraps, which only last till a fight is over, the effects are somewhat lasting. Also, throw doesn't keep people around as long as it used to unless you get the ground control off, which can also affect stats.
My advice? Use nerve when ranking, it really does help whoever is tanking. Use nerve in prolonged combat in tandem with kotegaeshi and kansetsuwaza to really ruin someone's day. It might take longer, but an assassin is able to weaken people more than shaman's given time and patience. Poison, acidic poison darts (I think), axe kick, ground control, and I believe some of the owaza strikes might cause weakness as well. Just my two cents.
