He means that by being able to defend a group member simply by being in their group, the scenario above is possible.
I.E. - Chump the cloud warrior (11th level) goes hunting out in emerald and sees Luckydog the human invoker (17th level) hanging out with some dryads. Chump, decked out in the gear "donated" by a "mysterious" benefactor, and knowing that Luckydog has little to no chance of beating him because he hits soooo hard, he'll be dead before he has a chance.
Chump runs over and kicks dirt in Luckydog's eyes adn the fight proceeds something like this...
Luckydog yells, 'Die, Chump, you dirty fool!'
Badchoicestupid the assassin (21st level) steps out of the shadows.
Chumpsadeadman the ranger (27th level) steps from his cover.
Chump hits the ground dead, bewilderment shining in his eyes.
Luckydog and his groupmates do a little dance, eat some Chump steaks and happily split the loot.
Now, if I am not mistaken, this is the scenario An Immortal was thinking of.
