Pets aren't allowed to leave the owners side in hell. They are to scared. Before you could just stand at the entrance and explore the whole place without even moving from the first spot of the circle. Then once you solve the puzzle take the quickest way there get the items you need and move on to the next circle.

I believe that's the tweak he was speaking of.
