I phrased this poorly. I didn't mean to ask "do you both dial up at the same time" (that's a different question) I meant "do you both dial up, rather than one PC having a cable modem, DSL, or other such things, OR one PC connecting to the other (which then dials up).

So, to re-ask the question: How does your connecting work? From what you've said, my GUESS is that both PC's are configured to dial to the same ISP, and you only use one at a time. But if that's how it is, then she could just use your computer, so then I think maybe YOUR computer does the dialup, and then hers is connected to yours via a LAN card and some nifty Win 98 tinkering.
Long story short, this info is pretty key to knowing what sort of problems you might be having.

At one office I worked at, we had a serious network problem because two PC's had the same static IP address. The second PC would get error messages and lose connectivity every 10 minutes or so, for 10 minutes. Then, when it got connectivity back, the first PC would lose connectivity for 10 minutes, etc. That's why I ask this question. An easy way to see what your IP is (and also to see if it is dynamically allocated, or static) follows:

1. Connect to the Internet (whatever way you do this).

2. Start->Run->winipcfg (type winipcfg in the text box after clicking start->run).

3. Among other information, one box will have your IP address in it. Write that down.

4. Disconnect from your ISP.

5. Repeat steps 1-3. If the two IP addresses match, odds are you have a static IP address. If not, it is dynamically allocated.

(For IP professionals out there, I realize the better way to do this is via Network Neighborhood, but I find this way easier to describe on a forum like this.)

So I'm assuming you have no DSL/Cable modem access, and you dial up using the "internet line". How does the second PC connect?
