A few things about it...
First, as PB noted, that post is EXCLUSIVELY targetted at gaining PK competence. Don't expect to glean a single thing about roleplaying from it. It's not "how to become good at CF" because that question cannot be answered without considering roleplaying. It was a response to someone who had been playing for years, but didn't feel like they knew areas, and so forth.
Second, that's obviously one of many approaches. I feel the best way to learn areas, and to rapidly learn about the game, is as a hero. Also, once you've heroed once, it's a lot easier to do it again. So I picked what I consider to be the easiest combo to hero quickly and still be self-sufficient when you hero.
Third, none of what I said is original. Nepenthe has made my point about gaining area knowledge a dozen times before me. If you know an area better than your foe, you're going to catch him, or elude him, where he won't be able to do the same. You're going to have a wider variety of preparatory means at your disposal, and so forth.
