If you're planning on really dedicating yourself to the character and dont mind taking the time to master the skills/spells play a fire giant or duergar. They are the strongest at hero. I prefer fire giants because of resist and the weapons they can wield.
Humans are good if you want to PK on your way up. Nothing special at hero though.
I noticed you didnt mention arials. People seem to think arial APs are weak, they are far far far from it. Mastering all of your skills/spells with an arial is a joke. Don't take this lightly as it is a bitch with giants and duergs. There is also a little known quirk of bloodlust and dual wield. When an arial is bloodlusted all of their dual wield swings AUTOMATICALLY hit. I played one and noone ever avoided my dual wield attack when lusted. It is sick.
Whatever you play, make sure you know where all the wands come from or you are rager fodder. APs don't avoid attacks very well so you will need to absorb alot of damage.
