As you said hps and mana are prime with damage needed also so I try to gear for a balance that I don't need to change often and is somewhat easy to replace after a death. Good pitch-black rings are an excellent start along with the gloves from the black knight. Summon up baelius (you can take him at lower ranks than you think solo if played smart) for some neckware. The human and arial captains round you out fairly nicely and you only have another piece of gear or two to gather. This should give you a boost of 100 - 120 in your hps and mana rather quickly and without too much effort.
