I once thought as you did, that irc might help me improve by surrounding myself with knowledgeable people.
What I found were people chatting alternatively about Christina Aguilera and how much of a dumbass so-and-so character's player must be.
I found that the norm is to have people on irc at the same time as playing cf, making inane and stupid comments about their current experiences, and trying like hell to slander in any way possible whatever character their character doesn't like at the moment.
I found you are more likely to be ignored or flat out mocked if you do not use a name of a character who is considered by them as "elite".
I found that my experience of cf, which was that of a fun game prior, moved a long way into the direction of tainted love.
All in all, in summary of my hours spent on IRC, it is a place where people who want to feel like they are on the "inside" go to make fun of and degrade everyone who they see as on the "outside".
