Let's say you're a goodie type, and you have just slain an evil knight. He's wearing armored magical boots, but they are too heavy to carry off and donate to some worthy cause. Up the road, you see another evil knight walking towards you. You know that if you leave the boots on the corpse, this new threat might take them and use their power to further their own ends.

So you chuck them in a nearby campfire. Better that no one has them then to see them pressed into service for evil's benefit.
