If I'm playing a fighting class, I don't let rank 10 bother me much. I make sure I have gathered the items I'd want at that level, which isn't very much. As far as practicing, I usually rank to 20-25 (28 once) completely alone. If you pick out-of-the-way areas, and watch your back, it works fine. While the fights take longer, you don't have to waste any time looking around for a group if you don't want to. With a (duergar) warrior I ran, I hit level 20 with four or five weapons, and ten or fifteen other useful skills perfected. I also learned several new areas very well this way. Take a look at the areas list... there are a lot of areas that you don't hear so much about, and are far from the Galadon/Eastern/NT Zone of Lowbie Death.
