2. As an alternative to your "bastardly, no regrets" suggestions, let me add my personal view that made empire somewhat enjoyable to play:

a. Your sect is the Maran.
b. The other sects are somewhat useful, like Servants of the Dawn.
c. Everyone else is a red aura.

Although there's no good way around moody sect leaders (Personally, I was tempted to anath people that didn't greet me with enough enthusiasm :) .)
