A pet is mob that you control. Not totally, but you can tell it to do certain things. The pets are going to act like mobs. In a fight your pet may perform certain skills, but you can't control what or when. There is no way to find out what skills your pet has unless it's a familiar, or unless you're an Immortal. Though through common sense you can guess a few of the skills a pet may have.
