I heartily agree, but I think that an extra command or two would have to be inserted to compensate.

Imagine that my two friends and me were sat huddled over one side of the room, while you were lurking in the shadows over the other side. We can't see you, but you can quite easily see us.

Your average group of people would just happily talk away, hence letting you listen in to everything we had to say... But a more paranoid group of people would whisper amongst themselves - this has two distinct outcomes - You can't hear what we're saying... BUT you can see that we're talking.

Here's the way I see this:

whisper target message
everybody else sees something like
"Player leans over and quietly whispers something in Target's ear"

gwhisper message (group whisper - as it's quite possible to share whispering amongst a group of people)
everybody else sees something like
"Player leans over and quietly whispers something to his companions"

and finally - for all you hiding assassins - allwhisper message
does exactly the same as the current whisper command does

Wow, this post is getting quite long, but now I'm going to combine this idea with CFer's and Eric's reply...

Thief Skill Eavesdrop
I like Eric's idea that certain words could be missed out depending on practice/level but a further enhancement of that could be gwhispers are easier to eavesdrop than personal whispers - which is quite easy to comprehend

Now, I'm not sure if it's doable within the code, but I'm going to expand this idea even more...

A hidden player would have a better chance of overhearing the conversation if the speaker lacked detect hidden. If the speaker had detect hidden, then the chance of overhearing is very similar to having an unhidden character but perhaps a throw could be made to have the speaker too concentrated on talking that he doesn't notice the eavesdropper creeping around behind him to listen in.

Now, the only thing I'm not too sure on is whether this would best be a "detect" type skill, where the eavesdropper has a chance to overhear everything whispered in the room until the skill wore off - OR - whether it could be applied as a targeted skill (both incoming and outgoing whispers would be picked up so the poor thief didn't have to keep swapping between each member of a group hoping to catch someone talking at the right time) which could only be applied to one player at a time.

That’s just about everything I can come up with on this at the moment, I hope my blabbering wasn’t TOO nonsensical – it often tends to end up that way when I go off on an idea.
