I have played 3 transmuters 2 of which I heroed the other to first form. Two were human the other half elf. Though the half elf did learn a little faster and being able to train to full with one practice was nice, the iron thing sucks and the humans are a little healthier, which once everything is perfected is the most important thing. Unless you want to be evil or good or are fishing for a particluar form, gnome is probably the best race. If you pump all the extra pracs into hp, they are the healthiest at the end and the int is as good as a human. As a added bonus, a reduced gnome cant be bashed which is nice till you get control translucence i would think (never played a gnome). If choosing Arcane focus instead of shapeshifting, most ppl say drow or elf is the way to go since sneaking in duo noone has any idea you are there, though i think a 500 exp penalty is going to make a muter more trouble than the class is worth.
