I do agree that lying to arbiters could be a part of good, interesting roleplay. I've played manipulative characters much like the one The Arcane laid out for you; in fact, Macheath was such a character. However, I do not think that what the group did to you was excusable as "good roleplay." Nor do I believe that just anybody that lies to Arbiters is doing the world a service. Unless you have some sort of roleplay reason to get together and lie on a grand scale to screw somebody over, you're just dicking around because it's convenient for you.
