Here is my idea to aid newbies and those experimenting with new classes for the first time... John attacks Joan. Joan enters the command "LEARN". Combat slows down a little allowing both sides more time to consider what their next command should be. Should Joan win the fight, her penalty will be that she may not loot John's corpse.
