When you pour years of your life, thousands of hours, into a totally immersive experience such as CF, it can no longer be considered a game; atleast not to the person using it. Let's look at what you get out of CF. On the psychological side of CF, you get relationships with others. You gain a massive increase in your imaginative skills... you start to see yourself as your characters, and think of Thera not just as "e e e e e e" to get from one place to another, but as real locations. What does real life have to compare to this? It is a comfortable escape from life. It is a bit more time-consuming than your average hobby. For some people, it becomes their real life, overshadowing everything else for awhile. So, if others get passionate, or overly verbose in their defense/justification of their little hobby which is CF, it is understandable. This is a little community, and everybody needs their thoughts heard from time to time. Nobody wants to put such a chunk of their life into something so vast, and feel like they made no lasting impact. So... to an outsider, yes. This is just a forum about a stupid game. Nobody can really appreciate what the game is all about until they become a part of it. Is living your life thru the mud a complete waste of time? That's debatable. What is certain is that there is definitely alot which is appealing and fulfilling about CF, and years after it is gone, people will still think back to all the great times that they had there.
If you put 5 hours of your life into a diversion such as a computer game... well, that is entertainment.
On the superficial side of things, you have the prospect of a character which always has room for improvement.
You have the possibility of seeing and learning something new and exciting every minute you are logged in.
You gain the advantage over most other video games in that you are actually interacting with other living human beings.
If you are playing a serious character, you feel terrible when you do things which screw them up. You get really excited when something neat happens, or you survive a situation you thought you were up against certain death.
