Knowing the areas is generally a must, cause then you know where to get the best gear to suit your needs, where to get those bonus pieces, wands, staves, and so on. You also know where to run and for what reasons and knowing the areas generally means that nobody can hide from you.

Understanding game mechanics is huge, because at its core, beneath all of the smoke and mirrors, there's a computer that is deciding what happens. This is probably my greatest obstacle because I can't make the connections. I always forget about saves and so on, so when I fail at something I blame my poor ass luck or an underpowered skill rather than understanding that maybe the other person was prepared with saves versus spell or whatever. A good example(and this is going to make me look like a moron), but I didn't think about stacking up save versus spell to protect myself against clairvoyance. Having been a coder on a mud gives you a step up and some insight into why some things work the way they do, but I think there can be no question that seeing the CF-code or having coded things for CF is like having one of those cheat books for a Playstation game. Sure you have to understand what does what and why, but I'm sure it's easier if you have any coding experience whatsoever.

Loop-holes are also huge, of course it can also get you denied for abusing bugs, but some of the less heinous loop-holes are good to know.

I don't think that knowing the best race-class combos is all that important since everybody knows what works with ease and what doesn't take much skill at all.

That's what I think of when I think of an elite player, but that's just my opinion. Of course, lays strictly in the realm of PK. I'd like to think that being a good roleplayer "enbiggens" the lowest amoeba on the ladder to elitedom and maybe that it even provides a leg-up, whether it does or not is left "as an excercise for the reader."
