Most shield blocking has very little to do with the size of
the shield. It has to do with positioning the shield to intercept
the blow before it gets close to the body. One style teaches to
punch at the weapon's hilt or haft to stop it's momentum before it
starts. A body shield isn't effective in single combat. It only works
if you have quite a few in a wall. A larger shield actually gets in the
way and blocks your vision. So a giant using a small shield should be
able to use it just fine. In fact, a giant with a small shield should be
better than a dwarf with a body shield since the dwarf loses most of his
mobility trying to hide behind the shield. I would prefer a two foot diameter
round shield than a four foot teardrop any day.
