I've never had a trannie, but I've often thought of making one for exploration purposes as well and I've seen plenty in action so here is what I'd do.

I wouldn't go water major because some underwater areas are not completely under water (Kuo-Toa), and by going water major you're greatly limiting you're effectiveness in the non-underwater areas that you'll want to explore.

I'd go water minor and hope for the sea-snake for reasons I'll go into in a minute.

For your major it's a toss-up between offense and defense. I feel as though half of exploration is being able to kill the mobs and identify their gear(which is why I'd hope for sea-snake since it's more offensive oriented than snapping turtle), see if they're carrying anything useful like wands, and so on. So offense is a good way to go or you could go defense. If you go defense I'd hope for the porcupine, again since killing things is half of exploration and if you plan on spending time alone you could be old and gray by the time your mongoose kills anything.

Having taken a mongoose muter into Kuo-Toa I can tell you that I wished that he were a porcupine every second of it cause a shaman/mongoose duo just doesn't do enough damage to be effective in the long run. The only thing you have to watch out for as a porcupine is mobs that wield polearms/spears.
