I agree that in most cases mud population increases because friends get their friends to play the same game. I started to play this way too. But after you pass a newbie time when you learn and start to think of yourself as of an average experienced player you don't need any perma group. In my experience I mostly fight my friends than group with them. And it is good - you can see who is better, heh :) Try to look it this way and you will see no danger in perma-group rule.
