Honestly, do you really need an imm to figure out that sanc cuts damage in half? Or that resist seems to cut damage less than sanc but still quite a bit? Maybe it's 40%, or 30%, but shit, 33% seemed like a nice logical round number to go with.

When I had a bard, I said, uh, what's resist do? And my groupmates said, shut up motherfucker and sing it, and why do you tank so badly? After I sat down and pouted, they said, duh, it cuts damage 33%. Since then I've kind of just went with that, since it seems about right as demonstrated by actual use.

This would fall under one of the 'common knowledge' things. Probably it's been tested out by people like the DIKU freaks, who actually go someplace with set damage (as Joshu said. what he means is an elven-vaults type trap place I guess.) and check the hit point loss with and without resist and then do the math.

Or maybe I'm lying, it's all a huge conspiracy, and this is the sort of thing Shokai and Jullias and Nepenthe and Bria and I use for post-orgy pillow talk.
