Indeed a paladin could do that, but really, a Paladin is not supposed to keep so much gold or clothing based on the theory that there is someone who is in more need of it than they. Now then, while a Paladin could do this and no one would every figure out, I don't think it would take that much effort to actually roleplay and give the gold away...
