I've always imagined that tells and the like could be used to convey images, sentiments and emotion and so forth. Kind of like Perin and the wolves in the Wheel of Time series. Really, it's just a matter of preference. Maybe your characters use those modes of communication solely to convey audio messages. This doesn't prohibit others from using tells the like to convey other sorts of messages.
