What I did when this would happen to me was go to a secluded place, camo, and practice lore. Was it boring? Yep. Did it help? Yep. Plus the added bonus of not having to ask to have stuff id'd was nice.

I guess I see rangers as guys who SHOULD be "sitting on your ass in a forest 94% of the time" as the other guy said. Except, instead of "sitting on your ass," you can hunt people. A _lot_ of the places people go to level have a wilderness area either nearby or actually as part of it (battlefields, kiadana, and the elf-place in the past come to mind). I'd sit for a good 45 minute stalking a group of three, figuring out how I could take them all out while they fought something else. A lot of times they'd end up walking right past me while I "pondered"...but I looked at that time I'd spent as "fastcamo insurance".
