... most of those were "ripoffs" of pen-n-paper RPGs bfore MUDs ever existed, which were "ripped off" from various fantasy writers before RPGs existed, which were "ripped off" from history and myths that are older than dirt. It's equivalent to going to one of those medieval re-enactment thingies and saying "Hey! You guys are ripping off CF! Stop that parrying and riposting right now!" I don't doubt that some members of the Diablo II team have visited a MUD or two in their day. The flavor is certainly there. But calling it a "total ripoff" is an insult to the designers of the amusing, pretty (yet somehow empty) bauble that is Diablo II. > > Someone just introduced me to Diablo II. I thought it was a total rip off of the fields. Does anyone else concur? There are a lot of similarities. I've never played another MUD other than CF so I have no basis to judge the others but DII has dual wield, necromancers, berserk, mercs, scrolls, potions, armor, mobs, weather, hps, mana, and lot of CF related things. I've heard a few comments on the forum about it and now I can see why you guys play it when CF is down.
They have common inspirations, but it's hardly something that is covered under the "© 2000 Carrion Fields, LLC. All rights reserved." passage, even now that the MUD is an official corporation of sorts.
