Ok... here's my VIP-take on it.

You need a deterrent for death... something to make dying to a mob undesirable. 1/3 of a con is something, but the vast majority of CF players won't get near condeath, due either to a semblance of skill or deletion prior to approaching that point.

When you die to a player, you probably lose your eq. When you die to a mob, you usually keep your suit... so you have to lose something else.

It sets up a sort of tradeoff... a lot of the best exp areas are also designed to be somewhat risky, be it with progs or wandering aggros, or whatever... so you get exp quickly, but you also risk losing it if you mess up.

That said, it sucks, a lot, to lose 15k exp to a death. And it's frustrating, and often leads to a player doing more things that make that hole larger. I once got a conjurer of mine in a 50k hole and accrued 2 familiar deaths in under 10 minutes, trying stubbornly to kill a mob at 25 that I just couldn't kill (though I could get it to convulsing... grr :P).

Ranking is largely tedious, yes... but I guess I look at that as a necessary evil. I'm curious to hear your alternative suggestions for making mob deaths mean something.
