I started using standard telnet with a screen max of scroll back. A mud client (I use zmud) is definetly going to help you play cf. I do use triggers though. Mainly for making things more visible.. eg if a protection falls you can make it print out in big letters ****MY PROTECTION FELL*****, cos I hate missing that in the crap flowing up the screen. Ive used buttons alot, saves on rsi and I typo too much. Ive also just started using macros a bit more to help with pks.. basically so I dont keep mistyping someones name. I still dont use triggers/macros etc half as much as a ton of other people but they are useful.
Zepachu explained triggers fairly well, and Lynxaria pointed out that they can be dangerous - eg you get hungry in a fight at the wrong time you may be grabbing your food rather than your disarmed weapon.
