What is misleading about the helpfiles? It says spefically...

"This can be used to start combat, or in combat if you are not tanking".

It does not say it can be used _during_ combat. You need to use it to initiate an attack. Its no different than backstab or charm, just turn off autoassist and _then_ type hamstring when the other people in your group are fighting something.
