I believe you are more or less new to CF so : Generaly AC works vs hitroll of opponent. Once in a while it makes opponent miss their blow. Saves are totally different matter. They higher your changes to save vs different spells. 'Saves vs spell' are most common and applied almost to all spells. Try to get 'saves vs spell' as low (-something) as possible without harming your usual gearing strategy. I hope it helps.
Here is the answer.
Armor Class (AC) is pretty much useless in CF save for low ranks.
Magical AC works vs weapons with magical attack types weapons (like wrath, flaming bite, etc)
That's why arial mages/what_ever can tank orphans in Balator so good.
On higher ranks or vs players it hardly ever matter at all.
'Saves vs paralize' work vs hold/halt person spell.
'Saves vs breath' - vs breathing attacks. Help you to reduce damage and also prevent your gear from shattering.
Saves vs rods, pertrification - do mostly nothing in CF. They came from AD&D spell system. Do not worry about them.
(Mages usually go toward +hp and warrior_like for +dam.)
