Unfortunately for me I did not get any more knowledge then I have.
I do act exectly as you describe. Coinsidence ?

imperial defence/mace/shield + stoneskin/shield are usually what I use.
as for assassin - very true.

Paladin/Healer marans were working together and hunting me over all Thera.
Once while I was running I was jumped by rager assassin defender.
He tried to assassinate me and got down to writing before I have realized I am fighting.
He got smart, run around a bit, healed, came back, strangled, blindned, poisoned me and tried again.
Still in imperial defense+mace+shield I got him to gushing in 3 rounds. Then I hit succesful cranial on him and beeing
blind/poisoned decided not to be a sitting duck for marans teleported.
