Ok, which familiar you get depends on your alignment.
For each alingment there are 3 different types of familiar
you can get. Once you cast it spell for the first time,
you will always get the same creature that answered your
first call.

Among neutral familiars, all three have some positive sides,
so if you are not going to try everything, you will be ok
if you're neutral.

Among good familiars, faerie dragon sucks. Delete if you get
one. Coyote is definitely good (especially for a master), don't
know about owl.

Evils frequently delete once they get devilish imp. This may
mean that this familiar also sucks. Quasit is very nice, not
sure about raven.

And do a forum search, some people answered some questions
I think.
